“There’s been a big shift toward emotional #marketing in the last 10 yrs – it’s about getting attention, releasing chemicals in the brain, & getting brands locked into long-term memory” says @chrispearce     CLICK TO TWEET

“There’s a schism between two fundamental models. On the one side, you have what I call the ‘message transmission’ fans. They fundamentally believe, ‘We’ve got a message, we’ve got a great product, we’ve got some features and benefits, we will tell people about these features and benefits, they will like them, they will buy our product.’ On the other side, there’s a school of thought called subconscious seduction. I can bash you over the head all day telling you to buy my product, but it doesn’t mean you’re going to buy it. But if I can get into your subconscious, if I can make you think my brand is going to meet some of your goals — and they may be implicit goals, like being more successful, more stylish, or a better parent — if I can get you to consider my brand as a solution to that implicit goal, then you’ll be successful… this isn’t necessarily a misunderstanding; it’s a belief system.”

  • Understand context and the role of a particular piece of content at a particular time. Consider how a customer is feeling — their state of mind — at a particular time. It doesn’t have to be highly creative… it can be utilitarian instead of crazy creative. This approach can be extremely effective in terms of understanding the job that needs to be done. Then, if you need extra creativity at certain touchpoints, that’s where you’ll have more time to shine.
  • Look at neuroscience techniques to understand brand purchase and shopping behavior. It comes down to reward minus pain. How will AI help your bottom line and long-term advocacy? That’s the job of tech and AI as the change of pace speeds up and stretched marketing teams are struggling to keep up.
